Dear Bank Website

June 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

We’ve had a long and storied relationship, nearly 10 years long now. You are a local credit union that, despite having a rather poor online presence with a user interface that has been designed by people that apparently don’t use computers or their eyes, has kept my business by being relatively hassle-free to work with, especially compared to my previous bank.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that you outsource your Credit Card payment website to a company with an even weaker grasp of usability and security than you do. I am okay with the fact that browsing through past transactions does not make use of the notion of ‘pagination’ that other interface designers have discovered years ago. I no longer lose sleep at nights wondering why I cannot login to your website directly anymore, and must instead choose an item from a drop-down menu to be redirected to yet another site that allows me to login. The little voice in my head that tells me that assigning sequential account numbers to your customers is poor practice has been silenced years ago.

So why, today, when I go to your miniscule drop-down menu to choose the “credit card account” option, am I filled with rage to find this text pop-up on my screen:

Please be aware that by clicking OK, you will be leaving www.lmcu.org and be viewing content from another website. We encourage you to be aware of all privacy and security practices of that site before giving any information about yourself.

My dear credit union, you put the link there so that I can manage the credit card that I have obtained from you. If you are concerned about the content on this website that you are relying upon to provide an essential service to your customers, why have you partnered with this company in the first place?

What I’m saying is that I feel like I’ve been on the giving end of this relationship from day one, which is why little stuff like this might just put me over the edge.

Trying to remember if there were good times,

Update: After clicking ‘OK’ on the popup, I have found that you are now linking me to a 404 page. I think I’m going to see about filing papers soon.

Update 2: Your helpful and responsive phone service is not helping matters, nor are your promises that the credit card website will be integrated into the rest of the site within the next ten days. I wish I could quit you.
